DILATION AND RETINAL SCREENING
A Dilated Eye Examination enables your doctor to examine a much greater area of internal structures of the eye by allowing the pupil to open wider than normal.
With dilation, the health exam of the eye is more detailed and more accurate.
Imagine trying to see the contents of a closet through a keyhole. If you could make the keyhole wider (or open the door) you would be able to see everything in the closet!
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF A DILATED EYE EXAMINATION?
Dilation of the eye can aid in the detection of glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments, tumors, diabetes, and high blood pressure even before the onset of any symptoms or loss of vision. For some patients, dilation is necessary just to obtain an adequate view.
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR DILATING THE EYES?
Drops are placed in your eyes to widen, or dilate, the pupils. This allows the eye care professional to see more of the inside of your eyes to check for signs of the disease. Your eye care professional uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of damage and other eye problems. After the exam, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours.
Without dilation, the health exam of the eye is a very limited one. For this reason, we recommend that all our patients have this procedure done.
